What is it?
A grain grower is a farmer who grows one or more grain crops.
What will I do?
As a grain grower, you are usually responsible for a large area of land (known as broadacre cropping) on which you will grow one or more varieties of grains. You will need to understand land managment issues; pest, disease and weed management; have business skills; and have some knowledge of machinery in order to plant and harvest your crops. You will also need an understanding of soil management and might be interested in growing new varieties of crops.
Is it right for me?
If you have an interest in broadacre land management and grain growing, and enjoy spending a lot of time outdoors - then yes!
How do I get there?
There are many pathways to being a grain grower - you can do a traineeship, study agriculture at university or go straight into a job if you already have hands-on experience.
